Military Appreciation Month
What you can do to show your support of the troops and their families.

By Melissa Williams Netherton

Many of you might not know, but May is Military Appreciation Month!  Regardless of your position on the war, you can do many things to help support the men and women who dedicate their lives to protecting our freedom and their families who also make many sacrifices for the well-being of our country.

Below is a list of things you might consider doing in support of those who are serving.

  1. Adopt a Soldier: If you don’t have someone in your life who is actively serving in the military, you might want to consider adopting a soldier overseas to send packages and letters to.  You can find soldier’s who need support on various websites including www.soldiersangels.org.  This site is great because you can also submit a soldier if you know of one who could use some support.
  1. Host a Military Family: Military families go through a lot during deployments.  If you know a family who has a member deployed, keep them in your prayers!  In addition, it would be very appreciated if you offer assistance during this time (especially if the husband is deployed, leaving the wife alone with kids).  Ways you can help are: offer to baby-sit so the wife can get away for a while with her friends, invite the family over to share a meal, or just give your friend a call and let her know that you appreciate the sacrifices that she and her children are making in addition to her husbands commitment to serve the country.
  1. Shop with Companies that Give Back to the Troops: There will be an upcoming article on companies that offer discounts to military as well as companies that donate a portion of profits to military families and organizations.  Show your support by shopping with these companies!  You can do a search online for companies that offer these benefits.
  1. Pray: Prayer is such an effective method for helping our men and women.  When you pray for those serving the country, don’t forget to pray for their families as well who very often struggle with some serious prayer needs during deployment times.

Above all, it is important to remember those who are giving their all to give us the freedom we enjoy and give back to them in whatever way we can.
