Making Time for Yourself
4 easy ways to actually make it happen
By Jessica Smith: Certified Personal Trainer for PUSH.tv
Your
appointment book is overflowing, last weekend was jam packed
with errands and lessons, and you just forgot your best friend’s
birthday. Right now, the thought of making time for yourself
just makes you chuckle.
Life
may have you running on overdrive, but it really isn’t
that impossible to make time for yourself. And I’m not
talking about escaping to a spa retreat, or anything dramatic
like that. I’m talking about taking 60 minutes out of
your busy day and dedicating it to you.
Not
only is it doable, it’s actually necessary in order
to maintain your health and sanity.
Try these four easy ways to give yourself the gift of time:
- Stop watching TV. Did you know the average
person spends up to 8 hours a day in front of a TV set or
a computer? I am not saying you have to give up watching Desperate
Housewives altogether, but try scaling back a bit. Just
for this week, write down how much time you actually spend
on a daily basis watching TV or surfing the net. I’ll
bet your figure will surprise you.
- Get up 15 minutes earlier. I
know, getting up in the morning is already a drag, but
it’s only
fifteen minutes! While you won’t miss that much
sleep, a spare fifteen minutes can make a world of difference
at the end of the day when you need it most. (Besides, if
you can incorporate tip #1, you might end up in bed earlier,
so getting up shouldn’t be quite so hard).
- Schedule dates with yourself.
I know it sounds cheesy, but it works. Plug an hour or
two a week just for you into your Outlook calendar like
you would any other important meeting or appointment. Spend
that time doing something just for you – read a book, take that new pottery class
you have been meaning to try, or just take a relaxing bath.
If you just can’t bring yourself to do that, then try
booking yourself an actual appointment, but make it something
just for you, like a massage or a mani/pedi.
- Organize and streamline. You
can be wasting up to an hour a day with things like looking
for lost car keys, finding lost tax forms, etc. Put a mail
organizer on the table next to the front door for ingoing
and outgoing mail, mount a hook for your keys, rid your
closet of all the clothing items you don’t absolutely
love and you can save yourself precious minutes in your
daily routine that can add up to hours of free time for
yourself.
You
don’t
have to overhaul your entire existence or check into rehab
to make time for yourself. Simple changes in your daily routine
can allow you to give yourself some much needed TLC. Be selfish!
Besides, the more you give to yourself, the more you can
give to others.
